Rotary Watches are a jewellery manufacturer that produced and sold watches internationally since 1895. Various signs of instability had appeared when users were reporting drops on the system and lengthy delays when making changes.
Challenge
When we began supporting Rotary Watches, it became clear that systems weren’t setup correctly. There were inconsistency in configuration and there were various faults that were causing an unstable enviroment.
- High Network Latency
- System crashes and general lack of accessibility to some systems
- General concern that the system could completely fail if no changes were made.
After conducting a survey, we identified three key problems:
- Routing Loops in the network infrastructure. Both physical and logical
- Out-of-Date Key systems. This was leading to devices being unable to communicate effectively
- Domain Name Services (DNS), which allow systems to translate names that we understand like google.com to something that computers understand wasn’t working correctly. Leading to lengthy delays in system responses.
Solution
To resolve these issues, we completed the below:
- Eliminated all Network Loops through disconnecting unnecessary cabling or even removing networking that was unused, saving Rotary money on Energy costs.
- Updated all key systems to the latest stable versions. Due to the complexity of the Rotary Infrastructure we had to take great care to have minimal impact on day-to-day operations, which we did successfully.
- Corrected the configuration of key equipment to ensure that response times were the priority.
Outcome
To address the technical challenges Rotary was experiencing, we undertook a series of focused improvements designed to stabilise their infrastructure and enhance performance.
- Our first priority was eliminating the network loops that were causing instability and unnecessary strain on the system. By disconnecting redundant cabling and removing unused networking equipment, we not only improved reliability but also helped Rotary reduce ongoing energy costs by eliminating hardware that no longer served a purpose.
- We then proceeded to update all core systems to the latest stable versions. Given the size and complexity of Rotary’s environment, this required careful planning and precise execution to ensure continuity of service. Our team carried out these updates methodically, ensuring day‑to‑day operations were not disrupted and that all systems remained fully functional throughout the process.
- Finally, we corrected the configuration of key networking and infrastructure components. These refinements were aimed at prioritising response times and ensuring the environment performed efficiently under operational load. By optimising these configurations, we improved overall system responsiveness and created a more reliable and predictable IT experience for Rotary’s users.
Collectively, these actions strengthened the performance, stability, and cost‑effectiveness of Rotary’s IT estate, laying a more secure and efficient foundation for their ongoing operations.
